Debt Justice workshop this Saturday (10.30am – 2.30pm) with one of Europe’s leading debt activists, Nessa Ní Chassaide. This workshop will give participants a good grounding in the background to both the local and the global aspects of the debt crisis and a clear grasp of the arguments for debt justice here at home and in the Global south.

Social Media workshop (3-5pm) with Mark C .of Contact.ie is for those in need of a kick start on the use of online tools, facebook, Twitter and the strategic uses of social media in campaigning.

Creative Campaigning with members of Galway Occupy. Sunday 3 – 5pm

ANGLO: NOT OUR DEBT/ Public Meeting

The Debt Justice Action network is holding a public meeting on Tuesday, 21st
of February at the Harbour Hotel, Galway. All are welcome.

This public meeting aims to help us gain a better understanding of the scale
and nature of the debt repayments to former Anglo Irish Bank / Irish
Nationwide Building Society (INBS) and the strong arguments for suspension
of the next payments falling due in March.
How did we as a society end up paying?these debts? What will the impact of
these ongoing payments be on our communities, and society at large? And
most crucially, how can we work together to challenge this injustice?
This is an informal information-sharing meeting open to all individuals and
community-based organisations, with a focus on the various ways we can all
take action.

The meeting will feature:

Linking the cuts and charges to the debt

Brief on the Anglo / INBS Debt and Q&As with Tom McDonnell from
independent economic think-tank TASC

Inspiration and Lessons from the Global South with Vicky Donnelly, Galway
One World Centre

Group discussions looking at key questions of the impacts paying these
debts will have on our communities and what practical measures we can take
to stop them

Details of follow-on skills building workshops on for those interested in
getting involved and taking action in our own communities.

Conversational Approaches to Education for Social Change

How can we facilitate learners to really engage with local and global justice issues? How can we create conversations that really facilitate change and learning in our Communities?

These are some of the questions this one-day training seeks to answer. Organised by the Irish Development Education Association (www.ideaonline) the call for this event comes from a need to embed quality conversation and dialogue in education for social change.

Inspired by Art of Hosting approaches we will introduce and practice a number of different ways in which conversations may be hosted with different groups of people. We will consider when and why these methods can be used.

This one-day event is not an “Art of Hosting Training”, but rather an introduction to some of the core practices and methods used in Art of Hosting, a presentation of the concepts that underpin it and an exploration of their use in our practice as educators and activists (see www.artofhosting.org for further info).

As a result of this one-day workshop you should feel more confident about using conversational approaches in your work, whether it is in the community centre, classroom, lecture hall or youth club. You should also have an understanding of the ideas and philosophy underpinning these approaches and where you can go to find out more.

The day will be facilitated by Alan Hayes and Eimear McNally.

Alan is the Development Education Trainer at the National Youth Council of Ireland. He is also a part-time lecturer in Youth & Community Work in the Liberties College, Dublin. Alan has been involved in facilitating conversations on Authentic Leadership since 2005 and has co-hosted two Art of Hosting trainings. He has red hair and doesn’t believe in coincidence.

Eimear McNally is Communications and Outreach Officer at IDEA. She regularly uses methods such as World Café and Open Space Technology with a variety of groups. She has attended a 4-day training in Art of Hosting in Sweden in April 2011 and was part of a team that hosted a training in the Burren, Co Clare in January 2012. Clare Intercultural Network (CIN) is delighted to announce the upcoming conference

‘I’m Ok, You’re Ok and That’s Ok’

on Human Rights Day, 10 December 2011

The conference is being organised as part of CIN’s Humanising Rights
and Responsibilities Series: Listening to Young People’s Voices. It
will explore the intersection between interculturalism, equality,
religious diversity, human rights and student voice in Irish
education.

‘Our World – Our Solutions’

16th November 4.00 – 5.30pm

This short workshop, facilitated by the Galway One World Centre, will
provide some background thinking and information to stimulate ideas for
teaching about the Millennium Development Goals in the primary classroom.

The session will be of particular relevance to teachers who are interested
in carrying out class projects for the 2012 ‘Our World’ Irish Aid Awards.
‘Our World’ teachers packs and some copies of the Our World Kid’s Magazine
will be available to take away.

Volunteering Overseas: Where do I start?

Who should attend?

This course is open to anyone considering volunteering or working overseas for global development (both short-term and long-term).

What is covered?
This participatory one-day workshop covers the following topics:

An introduction to development
The role of the volunteer/development worker
Motivations and expectations for volunteering
Types of volunteering opportunities available
Possibilities for getting involved in global development from Ireland

What does the course achieve?

A space for people who are considering volunteering overseas to meet, explore & discuss the issues informally
An introduction to development issues
An opportunity to consider critical perspectives on volunteering and to reflect on good practice in overseas volunteering
An opportunity to meet with recently returned volunteers and development workers

How much does it cost?

€30 non-member (waged)

OWW Training Workshop – A Rich Man’s World?

As part of One World Week 2011, the Galway One World Centre is holding a Training Workshop for Youth Workers and Educators on November 7th from 7pm – 9pm in Galway (exact venue to be announced).

This year’s One World Week youthwork resource pack, ‘A Rich Man’s World?’ addresses global issues affecting our lives. It examines local and global justice issues such as poverty, education, employment and fair relationships between countries and people using a variety of methodologies to help meet the learning needs of your group.

Through participation in the workshop you’ll gain information and confidence to enable you to run the activities with your group. However, it is very likely that you may want to explore a particular issue in more depth, so we’ll also provide sources of further information and contact details to take your interest further.

Centre for Global Education and Galway One World Centre invite participation in a seminar titled New Communities and the Wider World: Strengthening Knowledge of Global Issues in New Communities

The seminar aims to strengthen global education practice in minority communities in the Galway area. It will also highlight the importance of enhanced global education work in minority communities and the increased participation of minority organisations in the development sector. The seminar is targeted at staff, volunteers and management board members of minority organisations and individuals working in, or in support of, minority communities.

Wednesday, 9 November 2011 from 10.00am – 4.30pm (Light lunch provided) in Ballybane Enterprise Centre, Galway. Registration fees are: €20 (waged) and €10 (unwaged / student).
